What is vinyl siding?
Vinyl siding is constructed from polyvinyl chloride, better known as PVC. PVC
provides impact-resistance, strength and rigidity.
Why is vinyl siding so popular?
Vinyl siding is usually preferred because it requires little maintenance and is
available in a wide array of colors. Because the color doesn’t peel or flake,
there is never a need to paint vinyl siding. Vinyl siding installation costs are
also economical in terms of benefits offered. Vinyl siding does not contribute
to termite infestation, rotting or moisture buildup, nor does it dent or rust.
If damage should occur, the panels are easy to replace and vinyl siding repair
is fairly simple. Vinyl siding can also withstand a wide variety of temperatures
and climates.
Is painting less expensive than
vinyl siding?
As far as short-term expenditures go, painting may be less expensive, but when
you consider that houses generally need painted once every 3-5 years, vinyl
siding prices are much less expensive. Vinyl siding is a one time investment.
What types of wood siding are
there?
The three most common types are cedar siding, redwood siding, and cypress
siding.
What are the benefits of wood
siding?
Besides its curb appeal, wood siding (cedar siding, redwood siding, cypress
siding) also offers a large color palette, with endless painting and staining
options. With the right maintenance, wood siding can last up to 30 years.
What are the downfalls of wood
siding?
Wood absorbs and gives off moisture, so if not properly cared for,
redwood/cypress/cedar siding can deteriorate quickly. Wood is also attractive to
termites and woodpeckers, which can aid in deterioration.
What are a few tips for taking
care of wood siding?
Keep sprinkler systems away from the house, in order to decrease moisture. Paint
wood siding every 5 to 7 years and stain every 3 to 5 years. Conduct regular
inspections on joints and nails.
What is fiber-cement siding?
Fiber-cement siding is composed of cement, sand, and cellulose fiber that has
been autoclaved (cured with pressurized steam) to increase its strength and
dimensional stability. The fiber is added to reinforce the concrete and to
prevent cracking, which is inherent in concrete.
What are the perks of
fiber-cement siding?
Fiber-cement siding provides the look of wood without the hassles and costs that
come along with it. Fiber-cement siding is more durable than wood mainly because
it is termite-resistant and non-combustible. Fiber-cement siding is great for
hot and humid climates.
